The idea of taking an amazing family vacation is something that drives most of us to work in the first place. There is certainly no shortage of vacation destinations that cater to families, so it should be simple to take a dream vacation with your kin, right?  Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. In fact, many people find themselves so stressed during family vacations that they may feel the trip wasn’t worth it in the first place. That just might be why a recent survey showed that more people than ever are vacationing alone.

According to a survey conducted for Agoda.com, most people elect to travel alone because they want to relax. Other notable motivators were exploring new cultures and taking a break from the daily routine.

Destination-wise, the most popular spots for solo travelers varied by their countries of origin. Travelers from the United States listed Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, Bangkok Sydney, Melbourne, London, and Tokyo among the top destinations. Solo travelers from Asian countries cited Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, and Ho Chi Minh City as popular destinations. All of these cities have several elements in common. All of the destinations are fairly large, bustling cities that have plenty to offer in terms of nightlife, dining, and entertainment options.

The survey also revealed some other interesting demographical differences among travelers and their countries of origin. Those who travel alone and hail from Asia are generally between the ages of 18 and 26, while American and European solo travelers are over the age of 39 and tend to take longer trips than travelers from Asia.

Perhaps the most interesting statistic unveiled by the Agoda survey is regarding solo travelers’ relationship statuses. Most people would assume that the majority of people who prefer to travel alone are single but those people would be wrong!  In fact, the survey revealed that 60% of solo travelers are either married or in a serious relationship.

Getting out and traveling on your own can be a great way to recharge your batteries and experience a vacation like never before.
