Michael Strahan: The Man Behind The Stardom

Michael Strahan broke into worldwide notability back in the 1990’s when he began playing for the New York Giants. He has since won gold at Super Bowl XLII and has made a name for himself on TV. Today we’re going to introduce you to another side of Michael Strahan.

Raised In Germany

People assume most football players were raised on American soil, but not Michael Strahan. While he was born in Houston, Texas but spent most of his young life in Germany. His father was U.S. Army major and was stationed in Mannheim, West Germany. Michael spent almost ten years there.

Almost Didn’t Play High School Football

Given that he was in Germany, Michael couldn’t play high school football. Any football player knows that high school football is a major part of a player’s early success. His passion for football was so great that his father sent him back to America to live with his uncle during his senior year of high school. He attended Westbury High School in Houston and was impressive enough to garner a scholarship from Texas Southern University.

Homesick In America

When Michael first returned to the United States he was homesick and calling his parents every single day. His father stated the following, “In a way, Michael had been sheltered. Coming back to the States was a cultural shock for him.” Michael himself confirmed this by saying, “Man, I was scared to death. I was homesick for my mom and dad. It was extremely tough. Nothing was natural.” He would often tell his father that he wanted to go home to Germany and his dad had to assure him that he was home.

Brought Up By A Boxer

Football players are tough. Their job is run and get tackled on a nightly basis. These men have to keep up their appearance despite suffering through injuries. You can bet that these guys are tough and they are usually brought up tough. Michael Strahan had one tough father growing up. Not only was he a major in the army, but he also was a boxer who had a 1-1 record again Ken Norton, a future heavyweight boxing champion.

 

 

Not Rookie Of The Year

While he did get his start with the New York Giants in 1993, Michael wasn’t exactly rookie of the year. His start was rough and not very promising. His first season was plagued with injuries and he was only able to participate in nine games. He completely missed both of their playoff games which would have looked good for him. He actually didn’t have a real breakout year until 1997.

 

Following Uncle’s Footsteps

Growing up, Michael had very little interest in following in his father’s footsteps of being a boxer or a major in the army. He always loved football and that is where he took after his uncle Art. He also played defensive end and even won himself a scholarship to Texas Southern University. He then went pro and played for the Oilers and Atlanta Falcons.

Questioning His Future

Concerning his earlier days, Michael stated, “My dad had told me he thought I was good enough to get a football scholarship. I’d only played football a year, but he told me to do it, that I was good at it, and I believed him.” Yet his father stated in an interview. “One of the things I kind of questioned was would Michael have the courage to deal with it? He was easygoing, and his speed and strength – and his courage – were deceptive.”

First Days On The Field

Upon coming to America, Michael passion for football, but had never played organized football in his life. He felt so weird out on the field, “I never thought I could (play high school football). I had to figure it out as I went. I thought I was just a guy on the field to take up space, but it was because of my lack of knowledge more than anything else, and not my desire.”

Strahan’s Toughest Coach

When looking back at all the coaches that he has had through the years, Michael says nobody was as tough on him as his uncle Art. Michael recalls, “I remember Uncle Ray taking me in the front yard and slapping me around and showing me all different kinds of techniques and not taking it easy on me,” Art explained in an interview how he wanted to mold his nephew, “I had to develop an attitude where you had a right to get tired, but you didn’t have a right to quit. I didn’t want to give him an excuse for failure. I told him, ‘Michael, you’ve got to kill the will of the man across from you because pain don’t discriminate.’ ”

Growing Up Fast

Michael Strahan’s life was changing fast. In the space of two years, he left his sheltered life in Germany, played high school football and landed himself at Texas Southern University on a scholarship to play football. He was a relatively innocent man in a jungle. “At TSU, I grew from a boy to a man in a lot of different ways. I didn’t know anything when I got there, and I was around all these guys who were big and tough and strong and fast and grew up playing football. I had to grow up really fast.”

 

Weight Loss In Late Career

Playing defense, Michael spent most of his career as a really big guy with lots of power and a huge amount of speed. It is what made him one of the greats. As he got older, he lost a ton of weight and shrunk down by 90 pounds. It was his way of keeping up his speed and ending his career on a major high note. He looked completely different by his final season.

 

Brothers

Once Michael Strahan retired from football, he decided to delve into the world of acting. FOX offered the football star his very own sitcom called Brothers. The show was an immediate flop and was canceled after only 13 episodes. The show was about a man who moves back in with his parents in Houston, Texas after retiring from the NFL. Today the show is largely forgotten.

 

Tight-Knit Family

Michael Strahan has four children from two different women. This has zero effect on the relationship between his kids and the four of them are all very close. He reported in an interview with People, “You worry how the kids will mix and blend, but brothers and sisters are brothers and sisters regardless of different mothers.” He also reported that he is always on planes and phones trying to play an active role in his children’s lives.

 

Live! With Michael & Kelly

The world outside of football fans didn’t really know who Michael Strahan was in 2012.  Brothers tried to make a hit out of him, but didn’t quite work. It was when he joined forces with Kelly, formally of Live! With Regis And Kelly to create the new and improved show called Live! With Michael And Kelly. Michael was miles away from what Regis was and many wondered if it’d work out. It didn’t take long for audiences to fall in love with his wits and charm. He was on the show until 2016.

An Activist At Heart

Strahan has always been a major supporter of gay marriage rights. The world found this out back in 2011 when he filmed a marriage equality commercial. When pressed asked him how he felt about it, Strahan said, “As a defensive end for the New York Giants, I always played the game tough, but fair. And I feel it’s unfair to keep committed couples from being married.”

Michael Strahan has to be one of the most versatile stars in the world of show business. Not only has he been an actor, host and athlete, he is also a fashion designer. In 2015 he launched his own clothing line called Collection By Michael Strahan. He works through J.C. Penny and they sell suits, belts, collared shirts, ties and suspenders.

He Would Kneel

One of the biggest controversies in Football right now is athletes taking the knee during the national anthem as a way to call for equality in the United States. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Stahan stated, “I think I would have [kneeled],” he said. “I would have had a conversation with my father, and based on that conversation, and conversations, I’ve had with him, I’m pretty sure I would have.

Firstly, she isn’t famous or a movie star, just the average girl. She even was arrested in 2005 for robbery. She sounds like one interesting girlfriend to have around.

Three Times Married

Michael Strahan has bent down on one knee and put a ring on a woman’s finger three times. His first marriage was to Wanda Hutchins and lasted from 1992 to 1996. After that, he went on to marry Jean Muggli. That marriage went from 1999 to 2006. The last him he slipped a girl the right was to Nicole Murphy, the former wife of comedic legend Eddie Murphy. Sadly, the couple split up in 2014.

Why It Didn’t Work With Nicole

Nicole broke off their two-year relationship in 2014 right as Michael was getting inducted into the Hall of Fame. What was the reason for this? Apparently, the football player had been unfaithful during their time together and that is just when she discovered. Another reason sighted for their breakup was that the two had very conflicting schedules and they would go weeks without seeing one another.
