When many people think about Australia, their first thoughts are likely of vast, sweeping stretches of rugged, dusty terrain and the wildlife that has made Australia so unique. However, Australia is also home to some bustling cities. Melbourne is the second-largest city in Australia, and it offers just about the best of everything the “land down under” has to offer. From fantastic food to amazing lodging and activities, Melbourne is a bucket list vacation destination. Here’s are recommendations on where to stay, where to eat, and what to do when visiting Melbourne.
Where To Stay
We love quaint, B&B-feeling hotels as much as the next person, but sometimes we’re in the mood for a grand old hotel experience. That’s exactly what you get with the Langham, Melbourne. It’s a big hotel and the services and amenities are old-school. The hotel has nearly 400 rooms, making it one of the city’s largest. The staff and service screams of old-world charm and the rooms are comfortable and classy. The food from the hotel’s in-house restaurant is fantastic, as is the Chuan Spa on the premises. Finally, the hotel is only a couple minutes’ walk from the downtown area, making it a perfect location for your stay.
Where To Eat
You’ll need to prepare yourself mentally before dining at Attica. That’s because it will likely be one of the best meals you’ll ever experience and you’ll want to savor it. The restaurant features a pre-set menu that highlights the best of Outback cuisine (and we’re not talking about Bloomin’ Onions, here). The atmosphere is pretty casual given how formal the food and presentation are, which is nice if you’re looking for a great dinner with some equally great conversation. The wine list is amazing. If food isn’t all that important to you, feel free to pick another venue for dinner, but if you’re a serious foodie, Attica is NOT to be missed!
What To Do
As usual, picking a favorite thing to do in a spotlight city is never easy. In the case of Melbourne, we took into consideration that the city is pretty cutting edge when it comes to the art scene. So, our recommendation is NGV Australia, a huge art gallery that covers three different levels at the corner of Federation Square. It houses an excellent collection of Australian art that tends to focus more on local contributions than other galleries. The venue has several events and special displays throughout the year, so check ahead of time to see if something in particular catches your eye.
