Each year, we see a surge of travel trends that—for better or worse—change the way we all go on vacation or take business trips. With the year about to wrap up, we’re already looking forward to 2019 and the trends that will inevitably come with it. Here’s a look at some of the things we can expect to see after the ball drops.
For starters, 2019 is likely going to be a year that’s full of technological advancements in terms of travel. The world is more connected than ever before, so we can certainly expect some pretty advanced developments in the field of travel.
Perhaps an even bigger trend, though, is one that we’ve already seen in many countries and governments. More and more places are eliminating the use of single-use plastics, and that’s something that doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Chances are, if you have a big trip or two planned, you may end up visiting someplace that is going clean in terms of plastic usage. The vendors you use to get to your destination may be adopting the same mentality. Younger travelers are specifically looking for “sustainable vacations,” so you can bet that the industry is going to be catering to those wants.
Another major trend to expect in 2019 is the topic of social issues in potential vacation destinations directly influencing the amount of travel. More and more people are taking things like environmental and political issues into consideration before booking a trip. If there’s a chance that the local people or environment could be negatively impacted by visiting, a rising number of folks are opting out.
We’ll see a continuation of the focus on experiences while vacationing as opposed to material thing like souvenirs. That’s while we’ll also see more and more travel and tour operators focusing on these “experience”-based trips.
Finally, we’ll likely see more and more people taking shorter weekend trips next year. That doesn’t just mean road trips, either. We’ll likely see airlines promoting weekend getaway deals to some of the most desirable destinations.
