Season Of Sadness
Christmas is known universally as a happy time. Though the meaning varies according to the person, it’s generally thought of as a joyful, happy time that can be spent with family and friends. However, Selena Gomez’s mother Mandy has some reservations about the Christmas season due to sad events that took place years ago. Mandy recently revealed the whole sad story.
An Eye For Stardom
Selena Gomez wasn’t the first person in the family to set her sights on stardom. Before she was born, her future mother Mandy Teefey wanted to be an actress. Born Amanda Cornett, she worked not only as a stage actress but also as a makeup specialist and production manager in the world of film and television.
Young Mandy had a challenge on her hands as she continued her career in the industry, however. That’s because, at the age of 16, she had a child with her husband at the time, Ricardo Joel Gomez. They named their daughter Selena after the famous Mexican singer of the same name. Little did they know that their daughter would be famous herself.
Although Selena Gomez had two parents that loved her, that doesn’t mean that her upbringing was always ideal. Sadly, her mother Mandy and father Ricardo divorced when Selena was just five years old. Afterward, it was very difficult for Mandy to support her and her daughter at times while working in a tough industry. However, Selena started acting at just seven years old, earning a role on Barney & Friends.
Selena’s Big Break
Neither Selena nor her mother Mandy could have known what was going to happen when the young performer turned 12 years old. It all started with an audition for a new Disney Channel series called Wizards of Waverly Place. Selena was a hit with the producers, and she ended up earning the lead role on the show!
Selena Gomez and her new show were a hit, with Wizards of Waverly Place running for five years until 2012. By then, Selena was an adult and had turned her attention to singing after signing a contract with Hollywood Records a few years before.
Lucky In Love
Selena was having the time of her life as her career took off, but she wasn’t the only one that was on a lucky street of sorts. Her mother, Mandy, met and married Brian Teefey and her professional life benefited, as well. Mandy and her new husband formed a management company and decided to start a family, as Mandy became pregnant in 2011.
When she heard the news, Selena Gomez was extremely excited to become a big sister. She announced the news on Twitter to her legion of fans, letting them know that her mother was pregnant with her future brother or sister. She appeared extremely happy in interviews, even saying that she was “the happiest girl in the world.”
A Cruel Twist
Sometimes things don’t work out as you’d hope in life, and that was sadly the case for Mandy’s pregnancy. She suffered a miscarriage just a few weeks after Selena announced the pregnancy on Twitter. It was a devastating setback that led Selena to cancel public appearances so that she could be there to support her mother in person.
Selena Breaks The Silence
Selena broke the silence and did the difficult task of announcing the sad news to her fans online. She also revealed some particularly heartbreaking information – that the baby would have been a girl, which Mandy would have named Scarlett. Nonetheless, Selena expressed that she was very appreciative for her fans’ thoughts and prayers.
Mother And Daughter
Not only is Mandy a huge supporter of her daughter’s career, but she has played an active part in it as well. She helped manage Selena’s successful career up until 2014. After that, she would join Selena as one of the executive producers of the hit Netflix original series 13 Reasons Why.
A Happy Ending
Fortunately, Mandy was able to not only rebound emotionally from the miscarriage but also become pregnant again in 2013. This time around, she and Brian became parents to a daughter that they named Grace. Selena often features her little sister on her Instagram photos. Although Grace is the apple of Mandy’s eye, she has never forgotten about Scarlett.
A Moving Rememberance
In fact, Mandy marked the sixth anniversary of her tragic miscarriage in December 2017 by expressing how much Scarlett had meant to her. She went to Instagram and spoke emotionally about the experience and eulogized her daughter in a post that certainly meant a lot to everybody that was able to read it.
A Special Celebration
The post was written on December 17, which happened to be the date when she miscarried. During her post, Mandy made sure to thank all of the people that had prayed for her or sent supportive messages. She talked about how the family honored Scarlett, but writing letters on red balloons and releasing them into the sky.
The Second Season
Mandy has still been very productive professionally even as her family life has taken up quite a bit of her time and focus. She continued her production duties on 13 Reasons Why, which recently wrapped its second season. Even amidst the hustle and bustle, Mandy said that she can always feel the presence of her lost daughter.
A Little Help From Her Friends
Although her husband Brian and daughter Selena have been instrumental in helping her get through a difficult process, Mandy has also had support from her colleagues in the entertainment industry. In particular, Mandy said that her 13 Reasons Why family has helped her smile and feel loved when she needed it the most.
Mandy has always been committed to her family, especially her daughter Selena. With the addition of daughters Scarlett and Grace, this feeling has only grown. She said that being a mother is a huge part of her life and that her love for her children is “pretty fierce.” She added that “family is what matters.”
Another Big Scare
Another huge health scare reared its head when Selena suffered kidney failure related to lupus symptoms during 2017. Fortunately, she also once again saw the power of love as a kidney donation from Francia Raisa was able to ensure her future. Mandy has certainly had her fill of such health difficulties and scares.
Fans Are Family
Selena and Mandy often post pictures of themselves enjoying time spent together or with Grace, the newest addition to the family. Still, Mandy makes it clear that her family is not just those she’s related to by blood. “Fans, I want you to know you are family,” she told her followers in one recent post.
Back Together Again
Selena recently made news all over the world when it seemed that she has reunited with her ex-boyfriend, pop superstar Justin Bieber. Understandably, Mandy is cautious about the situation due to what happened between the two in the past. However, one thing is for certain: she won’t give up her love and support for her daughter.
