Most people tend to get married at some point during their 20s or 30s, but Hollywood is a much different environment than the world most of us live in. For one reason or another, many highly successful celebrity women have chosen not to get married. Here are some of the most famous women to have passed up on tying the knot. You may be surprised at who they are!
Actress Dana Delany had her biggest role during her time on the hit show Desperate Housewives, but has never felt any particular need to become a wife herself. Over ten years ago, Delany admitted that marriage has never been a top priority to her but that she would be ready to marry the right man. Delany prides herself on blending in during real life while playing a variety of characters on-screen and because of her outlook on privacy, is rarely in high-profile relationships.
Singer Rod Stewart was known as being a bit of a player, and perhaps his daughter, Kimberly Stewart, has followed in his footsteps. She has dated around some but has barely had any serious relationships, and only been engaged once, to Talan Torriero of Laguna Beach after knowing him only a few weeks. She quickly called that engagement off and later gave birth to a daughter that was apparently fathered by Benicio del Toro in a one-night stand between the two.
As a famous tennis star and one of the most beautiful athletes ever, Anna Kournikova has certainly had no shortage of suitors. However, she has been very secretive about her relationships. There were claims that she was once engaged to former hockey star Pavel Bure and briefly married to another hockey star, Sergei Fedorov, but Kournikova has denied both claims. There were even rumors that she was married at one point to longtime beau Enrique Iglesias, but you guessed it…Anna denied that, too.
21 Grams and The Ring star Naomi Watts has had notable relationships with Heath Ledger and more recently, Liev Schreiber. However, even her 11-year relationship with Schreiber failed to materialize itself into marriage. The two have a pair of children together, but sadly split up in 2016. Watts isn’t against marriage, but simply wasn’t in a hurry to do it when she was with Schreiber.
Like many unmarried women in Hollywood, Vanessa Paradis has not been lacking when it comes to long-term dating relationships. Vanessa was with Johnny Depp for about 15 years and had two children with the legendary actor, but neither of them ever felt compelled to tie the knot. Vanessa once said that as parents that shared children together, they were already “more than married.”
Actress Mindy Kaling has gone from yearning for a long-term relationship during her 20s to being almost entirely focused on her career and goals now. “My work is so rewarding and I’m so self-centered about it that I’m kind of excited about not having to go home and ask someone about their day,” Kaling said. Perhaps when she gets more time on her hands, Kaling will be open to settling down, but for now she seems perfectly happy!
Rapper turned singer and actress Queen Latifah has long been very secretive about her personal life. Rumors of her relationship status and sexual orientation have persisted since she first entered the public eye. However, when it comes to her stance on marriage, she’s much more clear. She actually bought herself a pair of wedding bands that she wears. In order to marry her, someone has to convince her to “take this ring off my finger,” she said.
Anita Hill made headlines when she testified against Clarence Thomas in court in one of the biggest scandals of the late 20th century. Although her career has kept her in the public eye for decades, she keeps her private life as far away from prying eyes as possible. We do know that she has had a longtime boyfriend, but Hill said that she simply hasn’t decided to get married to him (or anyone else) yet.
More than any other women on this list, legendary actress Greta Garbo was once very close to getting married. How close? She actually made it all the way to her wedding day before leaving actor Jack Gilbert at the altar. It probably didn’t help that Garbo was often said to be not very friendly with new people. She did say in 1955 that she would be happy to settle down with the right person, but that person apparently never came around.
During her long, successful acting career, Diane Keaton has played many wives on TV and in films, but she has never been one herself. Keaton has dated all manner of men, from Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson to Keanu Reeves. However, she seemed to be closest to settling down with Al Pacino before their relationship came to an end. Keaton has said that she doesn’t think she can compromise enough to be in a successful marriage.
Enigmatic fashion designer Coco Chanel was known during her time for being involved in a number of steamy love affairs. However, Chanel seemed to prefer short-term relationships over committed relationships. “I never wanted to weigh more heavily on a man than a bird,” Chanel famously said. Despite the fact that she never married, many believe that she did have a child that was ultimately raised by her sister.
Not only is Oprah Winfrey one of the most famous women in the world, but she’s also among the richest entertainers. Perhaps it’s due to her success and stature that she hasn’t felt any particular need to get married. She has been in a relationship with Stedman Graham for over three decades, but they still don’t plan to get married. Although Oprah has said that she considers herself to be traditional, she doesn’t think she can accept the responsibility that comes with being a wife.
Jacqueline Bisset has been in three seven-year relationships and a 14-year relationship, as well. Despite her dating resume, the combined 35 years in relationships failed to yield a single marriage. Bisset said that not only is she too independent to get married, but that being with someone for too long tends to give you “too much information” on them. “You start to discover them and then you have to marry bad habits and I’m not sure I can cope with them,” Bisset said.
Comedian and actress Sarah Silverman is very opinionated, as anyone who has seen her standup act or read her Twitter feed can attest to. While Silverman has dated big names such as Jimmy Kimmel and more recently, Michael Sheen, she simply doesn’t believe in marriage. “I’m not against marriage, but it’s just not for me,” Silverman said. “I’m a vegetarian, but I don’t have a problem if you want a hamburger.”
Stranger Things actress Winona Ryder never seems to age, which may be part of the reason she seems in no particular hurry to get married. While she was engaged to Johnny Depp way back in the 90s, she has since dated Matt Damon, Keanu Reeves, Val Kilmer, and others without walking down the aisle. She has been with Scott Mackinlay Hahn for six years and counting, but seems to be perfectly happy being with him without getting married.
Among the women on this list, actress Goldie Hawn may be the most surprising of them all. Why? Because she and actor Kurt Russell have long had one of the most stable relationships in Hollywood, having been together for three decades! The couple also has four children together, but according to Goldie, they don’t see any point in getting married. Instead of asking why they don’t get married, the couple wonders why they should feel the need to, Goldie says.
Actress and singer Kylie Minogue has been very close to getting married, even being engaged with Joshua Sasse as recently as this year before they broke it off. In interviews, Minogue has often said that while other people look for security and stability in relationships, she would rather feel that she has the opportunity for space and freedom. According to Minogue, marriage isn’t a very high priority.
When it comes to why she’s never been married, Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker’s guess is as good as yours. “Maybe a psychiatrist would say I’m not married now because I have some sort of father thing,” she quipped in 2015. She did have a serious relationship with Billy Crudup in the past, but when she was seven months pregnant with their child, Crudup left her and started dating Claire Danes.
Condoleeza Rice led a very public lifestyle as Secretary of State during the George W. Bush administration. Obviously, she was likely to busy during those years to date anyone seriously. Before her days in the spotlight, she was engaged to Rick Upchurch, who played for the Denver Broncos. However, their engagement didn’t stick long enough for them to walk down the aisle. Rice said that her single status is as simple as the fact that she hasn’t found anyone that she wants to marry.
Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham is known for playing an unmarried TV mom, and in this case, life emulates art. Graham has never been married, although she has been in a relationship with actor Peter Krause for seven years. When asked about whether she would seek to tie the knot with Krause, Graham told Ellen Degeneres that she already feels as if they are married. “It’s good the way it is,” she explained.
Sheryl Crow is either a woman with very cold feet or a woman with outstanding instincts. She has been engaged to Lance Armstrong and dated such big names as Owen Wilson and Eric Clapton. However, the singer has not been married, saying that she’d rather have broken engagements than broken marriages. Far from alone, she lives in Tennessee with her two adopted sons, Wyatt and Levi.
Lauryn Hill has always been a hard person to figure out, as evidenced by how she essentially disappeared from the public eye following her Grammy winning album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998. In her personal life, she dated Bob Marley’s son Rohan for 15 years and had five children with him, but they never married. Rohan said that Lauryn never seemed ready and in 2011, they broke up when Lauryn became pregnant with another man’s baby.
Kourtney Kardashian has seen her sisters get married, but has not yet made the move herself. This is a little strange considering that in many ways, she had the longest-running relationship of the group, dating Scott Disick on and off for ten years and having three children together. However, Scott once said that when things were going well, there seemed to be no reason to change anything that might swing things in the other direction. The two have been split since 2015, so perhaps they made the right decision.
Robin Roberts was a mainstay on ESPN and has since moved to mainstream news with a position on Good Morning America. One thing that hasn’t changed in recent years is her relationship status, as she has been with Amber Laign for 14 years. Despite their long relationship, the two don’t seem to have any immediate plans to marry. In fact, they continue to live in separate households! Maybe that’s the secret to their happiness?
Edie Falco has flexed her acting talent in TV series including The Sopranos and Nurse Jackie. However, despite having two adopted daughters, Falco has not yet felt compelled to get married with anyone. Sexy supermodel, producer, and television producer Tyra Banks is now in her early 40s, but has never tied the knot. While Banks has been pretty secretive about her dating relationships in the past, she did mention in 2005 that she had been a part of an abusive relationship in the past. Tyra seems to be in a much better place with longtime partner Erik Asla, however, as they have a son, York, together and have dated for four years.
Successful television producer Shonda Rhimes has been behind such smash hits as Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. However, the How to Get Away With Murder producer just can’t see herself taking the step to get married. She once told Oprah Winfrey that she wouldn’t get married because it would stop her from having “the life that I’ve created for myself.” Rhimes does have three children, however.
Although she had several high-profile relationships with men such as Billy Idol and Danny Bonaduce, Joan Jett never tied the knot. However, she is not upset about it. She never wanted to fit in the societal norms for women. She once said “I figured out it was a social thing, what women were allowed to do. At a very young age, I decided I was not going to follow women’s rules.”
Helena Bonham Carter
After 13 years, 2 children and 6 films together, Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton split, in 2015. They never saw the need for a legal marriage. Despite the split, Helena still believes the relationship was special. She said in an interview with Vanity Fair, “Our relationship was always somewhat special, and I think it’ll always remain special…Sometimes you’re not meant to be forever together. Sometimes you have to come to terms with the fact that that was it. But that was a gift, a massive gift.”

I think, intermittently, that you find Mr. Right, but you have to get lucky.”

This could have possibly led to the destabilization of her kingdom.

She served as the Governor of Arizona, the United State Secretary of Homeland Security under President Obama, and is currently the president of the University of California system. In 2012, Forbes ranked her as the ninth most powerful woman. With all that power and responsibility, it’s no wonder Napolitano never got married.

Susan B. Anthony is best known for her various fights against injustices. She was a huge women’s right activist as well as an abolitionist. Anthony was known for standing up against the laws of marriage. At the time, the men legally had complete control over their wives. When I was young, if a girl married poor, she became a housekeeper and a drudge. If she married wealth she became a pet and a doll. Just think, had I married at twenty, I would have been a drudge or a doll for fifty-nine years.”
