Mad Men was one of the most successful shows of the past twenty years and in many ways, a precursor to the wave of basic cable dramas that have taken over airwaves since. The show explored new ground, as it was set in the often-unbelievable world of a 1960s advertising firm. Many great actors and actresses helped make the show what it was, but what do they look like when not wearing 1960s garb? Read on to find out!
Allison Brie As Trudy Campbell
Allison Brie played Trudy Campbell, wife of unfaithful husband, Pete Campbell. The two were often seen on screen arguing, as Trudy eventually kicked her misbehaving husband out of the house. The two had a daughter together that heavily factored into Trudy’s decisions, and she ultimately chose not to take her bad husband back.
Allison Brie Now
You have probably seen Allison Brie on the hit show Community, which she was on until it ended in 2015. In 2017, Allison was seen in the Netflix original series GLOW (which earned her a Golden Globe nomination) and did voice work for BoJack Horseman, as well. She also appeared in the award-winning James Franco film The Disaster Artist.
Peyton List As Jane Siegel
There was no shortage of naughty secretaries on Mad Men, which apparently was appropriate for the time period. As Jane Siegel, Peyton List played Don Draper’s secretary. However, it wasn’t Don, but Roger Sterling, that Jane would become involved with, eventually leading to Roger leaving his wife and marrying her. Eventually, they would get divorced as well, proving Roger isn’t so good at marriage.
Peyton List Now
Not only was Peyton List a mainstay on Mad Men for five years, but she also played the role of Cara Coburn on The Tommorrow People. She also was seen recently on the hit superhero series The Flash and starred as Raimy Sullivan on Frequency, which was canceled after its first season.
January Jones As Betty Francis
As Betty Francis, January Jones got to enjoy a meaty role as a complex character with plenty of screen time. On the show, Betty started out as the prototypical 1960s housewife, but she eventually strayed as she became aware of Don Draper’s many infidelities. Afterward, she divorced Don and married Henry Francis. As the show moved toward its ending, Betty’s character arc concluded with her taking steps to be more independent.
January Jones Now
January Jones certainly benefited from her role as Betty Francis, earning two Golden Globe nominations over the years for her performance. She tried her hand at big-screen acting as the show came to an end, even appearing as Emma Frost in the big-budget superhero film X-Men: First Class. She ultimately went back to television and has played Melissa Chartres on The Last Man on Earth since 2015.
Aaron Staton As Ken Cosgrove
As Ken Cosgrove, Aaron Staton got to play a character that was torn between the lucrative world of advertising and his personal passion for writing. However, even a promotion to head of accounts at the firm couldn’t save his job forever, and he would eventually get fired. The tables turned when he took over at Dow Chemicals and turned down Don and Pete when they tried to attract the company’s business.
Aaron Staton Now
Aaron Staton has not limited himself to one area of acting. In fact, he did a very different kind of performing when he took the lead role in the ground-breaking video game L.A. Noire, which featured state of the art facial motion capture technology. He has also appeared on shows such as Ray Donovan and My Mother and Other Strangers.
Christina Hendricks As Joan Harris
Christina Hendricks turned heads for eight seasons of Mad Men as Joan Harris, who ascended all the way from office manager to partner of the firm due to her quick wits and work ethic. Of course, it wouldn’t be Mad Men without an extramarital affair, and Joan had one with Roger, leading to a child that she pretended was her husband’s. Naughty!
Christina Hendricks Now
Before her role in Mad Men, Christina Hendricks had appeared in many movies and TV shows but hadn’t garnered much notoriety. Six Emmy Award nominations later, she has appeared in such TV series as Hap and Leonard, Another Period, Tin Star, and the upcoming show Good Girls. She has also appeared in films such as Bad Santa 2 and Fist Fight.
Vincent Kartheiser As Pete Campbell
Vincent Kartheiser played Pete Campbell, an upstart in the advertising world that was always focused on showing his parents that he could succeed in the tough business. Unfortunately, he made a very stupid move when he tried to blackmail Don to get ahead. Although his marriage with Trudy Campbell didn’t work out, he did eventually open a West Coast branch of SC&P.
Vincent Kartheiser Now
Although many people didn’t know about Vincent Kartheiser before Mad Men, he has been acting since he was a teenager. His early credits included Little Big League, The Indian in the Cupboard, and Alaska. Since the conclusion of Mad Men, Vincent has been seen in films such as The Most Hated Woman in America and series including Genius.
Rich Sommer As Harry Crane
Every show needs an underdog, and Harry Crane was Mad Men‘s. However, Rich Sommer’s character made a poor choice by turning on Sal, which didn’t help him earn a lot of respect with his peers. Still, he eventually earned a promotion to head of Sterling Cooper’s TV department as he worked his way up the ladder.
Rich Sommer Now
Rich has appeared in many different series since Mad Men concluded, including a number of Netflix original series. Those credits include roles in GLOW, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, and Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later. He has also appeared on Elena of Avalor and did voice work for Regular Show.
Talia Balsam As Mona Sterling
Talia Balsam played Roger Sterling’s wife Mona on Mad Men. Mona certainly had a thankless life as Roger’s wife, considering the fact that Roger wasted no time in getting involved with Don’s secretary, Jane. However, Mona was not a weak woman and still had a role to play after the divorce, making regular appearances on the show.
Talia Balsam Now
Many people do not know that in real life, Talia is actually married to John Slattery, the actor who played Roger Sterling on Mad Men. Fortunately, life has not imitated art for the couple, who are still happily married. Talia has been seen in many other shows and movies, including Little Men and Z: The Beginning of Everything.
Jay R. Ferguson As Stan Rizzo
Jay Ferguson played Stan Rizzo, a character who served as the agency’s art director. Rizzo was a former campaign worker for President Lyndon B. Johnson and like many of the other guys on the show was quite a chauvinist. This changed a bit as he developed a crush on Peggy that would eventually become full-blown love and admiration.
Jay R. Ferguson Now
In real life, Ferguson is rarely seen with a beard and has been seen mostly on TV shows, making only rare appearances on the silver screen. His recurring roles include appearances on hit shows such as The Mindy Project and Twin Peaks. Next, he’ll be seen on Living Biblically, which is expected to air this year.
Cara Buono as Faye Miller
On Mad Men, Cara Buono played Faye Miller, a consumer research consultant. She immediately butted heads with Don Draper, who thought her psychological thoughts on advertising were a little crazy. However, this budding rivalry may have been more about a different type of tension, as the pair would ultimately engage in a short affair.
Cara Buono Now
While Cara Buono was only a part of the Mad Men cast for a single year, she still received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Following her appearances, she also was seen in shows such as The Good Wife and Castle. Most recently, Cara appeared as Mike Wheeler’s mother Karen on the Netflix hit Stranger Things.
John Slattery As Roger Sterling
Roger Sterling was one of the main characters in Mad Men, as one of the founding members of Sterling Cooper Advertising. He didn’t always seem as brilliant a mind as Don Draper when it came to working, but he was a smart and savvy strategist…except when it came to his love life. He had two unsuccessful marriages during the course of the show.
John Slattery Now
In real life, John Slattery is married to Talia Balsam, who played his first wife on Mad Men. Fans of Slattery will immediately recognize him from hit movies such as Spotlight and the 2017 film Churchill. He also appeared in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp. He received 4 Emmy nominations for his role as Roger Sterling.
Alexa Alemanni As Allison
Allison started off at the bottom in Mad Men, beginning as a receptionist when the show first debuted. However, she worked hard and was eventually promoted, becoming Don Draper’s personal secretary. Played by Alexa Alemanni, she was very good at her job but ultimately got a little too close to the boss, leading to her decision to depart the agency.
Alexa Alemanni Now
Alexa Alemanni did not appear in many high-profile roles before she got her big shot during Mad Men. She has successfully turned the role into consistent appearances in films and on TV since, however. She has been seen in such series as Masters of Sex and short films, including The Morning After and Another Round.
Mark Moses As Herman “Duck” Phillips
Actor Mark Moses played Herman “Duck” Phillips, who was hired by Don Draper to be the head of account services for the agency. However, Don and Duck did not get along for very long, as he lost the company several accounts. He eventually lost his mind a bit, trying to poop on Roger’s chair and even punching Don.
Mark Moses Now
Fortunately, in real life, Mark Moses is much more normal than his memorable character on Mad Men was. Since the show concluded, Mark has taken to playing much more conventional roles in shows such as Law & Order True Crime, The Last Ship, and Man Seeking Woman.
Teyonah Parris As Dawn Chambers
On Mad Men, much of the show’s plot had to do with the changing business environment of the 1960s. Teyonah Parris’ character, Dawn Chambers, was part of that, as she was hired as Don’s secretary to help the firm qualify as an equal opportunity employer. Dawn proved to be an excellent asset and was eventually promoted by Joan to personnel director.
Teyonah Parris Now
After her time on Mad Men, Teyonah Parris was featured as the lead actress on Chi-Raq. Most viewers, however, are likely to know her as Pamela Rose on the hit show Empire. She has also been seen in Where Children Play, Survivor’s Remorse, and Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story.
Ben Feldman As Michael Ginsberg
There are eccentric characters, and then there was Ben Feldman as Michael Ginsberg, a character who really had a hard time transitioning into the computer era. When the firm started to use computers, Ginsberg had a mental breakdown of sorts, believing that the computers were trying to control him. He lopped off a nipple to, uh, break the control and was carried off on a stretcher, never to be seen again on Mad Men.
Ben Feldman Now
Ben Feldman left Mad Men in a big way and then went on to star in the horror movie As Above, So Below. He also played recurring roles in A to Z, and eventually, the hit show Silicon Valley. Outside of acting, Feldman has become a father, as his wife Michaelle Mulitz gave birth to their first son last fall.
Rosemarie DeWitt As Midge Daniels
Rosemarie DeWitt played Midge Daniels on Mad Men, who was a character with one of the more complex arcs on the show. Don fell for her right away, and it wasn’t hard to see why, as she was a brilliant artist with plenty of ambition. Unfortunately, later on, she became addicted to drugs and lost most of her luster as a result.
Rosemarie DeWitt Now
After her role on Mad Men was over, Rosemarie DeWitt has mostly focused on acting in feature films. She appeared in Poltergeist, the critically acclaimed La La Land, and Arizona. Netflix subscribers probably remember her from an episode of the hit series Black Mirror, as well.
Julia Ormond As Marie Calvet
Marie Calvet was something of a foil for Don Draper on the show, since she was Don Draper’s mother-in-law after his second marriage. Julia Ormond played Marie, lending a little complexity to the role as she jousts with Don during his eventual divorce with her daughter. Marie would also join many others on the show by having an affair with Roger Sterling.
Julia Ormond Now
Julia Ormond has appeared in many TV shows, including Witches of East End, which aired during the same time as Mad Men. She has also appeared on such shows as Incorporated and in films including Rememory. Outside of acting, she is very active in causes that are important to her such as fighting against human trafficking.
Brian Batt As Salvatore Romano
As Salvatore Romano, Bryan Batt played a very complex character, as Salvatore grappled with closeted homosexuality on the show. Although he openly flirted with women in the office to disguise his true feelings, his sexuality still hurt his career in the end. Lucky Strike executive Lee Garner Jr. came on to him, and he declined, leading the agency to fire him instead of defending him.
Bryan Batt Now
Aside from his appearances on Mad Men, Bryan Batt has been very active in films. He has appeared in movies such as the critically acclaimed 12 Years a Slave, The Runner, and Mississippi Murder. He also played Mayor Quinn Maddox on the TV adaptation of the film Scream. Aside from acting, Bryan owns a fashion store and works as a designer.
Abigail Spencer As Suzanne Farrell
Abigail Spencer played Suzanne Farrell, one of the teachers of Sally, Don’s daughter. Suzanne first met Don at a parent-teacher conference and wouldn’t you know it; Don ended up hitting on her. Eventually, he wore down her resolve, and they had an affair. Unfortunately for her, she would ultimately be left hanging as Don was found out by Betty Hofstadt before the two could go on a steamy getaway.
Abigail Spencer Now
Abigail Spencer’s first big break was on Mad Men, and it led to many other roles, including appearances on TV series such as True Detective, Burning Love, Grey’s Anatomy, and Hawthorne. She also featured in the films Oz: The Great and Powerful and The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia.
Michael Gladis As Paul Kinsey
Michael Gladis portrayed Paul Kinsey, an average person who started as the agency’s copywriter and science fiction fan. However, he found himself without a role in the company when Peggy was chosen to handle the copywriting duties for the new firm. He was later seen on the show having become a Hare Krishna and working on a script for Star Trek.
Michael Gladis Now
Michael Gladis was last seen on Mad Men during the show’s 5th season. Since then, he has played a number of roles on television, making appearances on Reckless, House of Lies, and Feed the Beast, among other shows. In real life, he is engaged to 2 Broke Girls actress Beth Behrs. Lucky guy!
Randee Heller As Ida Blankenship
When the show began, Don’s secretary was Ida Blankenship, who was played by Randee Heller. Obviously, that didn’t last long, as Don had many secretaries throughout the series. Sure enough, she died one day at her desk, but not before Don discovered that she had once had an affair with Roger, who called her “The Queen of Perversion of the Highest Order.” Quite a nickname.
Randee Heller Now
Randee Heller’s time on Mad Men was extremely brief. Fortunately, she has gone on to do many more roles in television, making appearances on everything from Desperate Housewives and The Mentalist to Modern Family and Major Crimes. She received an Emmy nomination for her short performance in Mad Men, too!
Jamie Thomas King As Guy Mackendrick
Ida Blankenship wasn’t the only character to have a very short tenure on Mad Men. In addition, Jamie Thomas King’s Guy Mackendrick also only appeared on a single episode. In the episode, he was brought over to become the chief operating officer but had his foot run over by a lawnmower while celebrating at work. He survived but didn’t last at the firm.
Jamie Thomas King Now
Needless to say, Jamie Thomas King’s most famous role is probably not his one appearance on Mad Men. However, he has also shown up on TV shows that include Murdoch Mysteries, Storage 24, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and Marchlands. King is also a talented artist and does many private painting commissions.
Kiernan Shipka (Sally Draper)
The first child of Betty and Don Draper was Sally. Sally had a struggling relationship with her mother (and sometimes her father). As she grew older she witnessed her parents perform scandalous acts, which led her to want to be different than her parents. Her relationship with her mother culminated into one final scene after she discovered Betty was diagnosed with cancer.
Kiernan Shipka (Sally Draper)
Kiernan Shipka was only a young girl when she began filming “Mad Men.” By the last episode, viewers saw her turn into a beautiful young woman. After the series wrapped, Kiernan appeared in “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” and “Feud.” She was recently announced as the lead in the upcoming Netflix series “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”
Christopher Stanley (Henry Francis)
Henry Francis was much different than Betty’s first husband Don. He had a respectable career, as the Director of Public Relations and Research for Nelson Rockefeller, as well as loyally loved Betty. The two married and had an overall successful relationship. She grew to trust Francis so much that she wanted him to care for her children after death, rather than Don.
Christopher Stanley (Henry Francis)
Henry Francis was portrayed by Christopher Stanley on “Mad Men” for 6 years. During his sporadic appearances on the series, he also had roles in box office hits such as “Argo” and “Zero Dark Thirty.” Since “Mad Men,” he has appeared in productions such as “Comedy Bang! Bang!,” “Lethal Weapon,” and “American Crime.”
Melinda Page Hamilton (Anna Draper)
Dick Whitman stole the identity of Don Draper after he was killed in South Korea. However, Draper also had a wife at home, Anna. Therefore, when Anna heard her husband was still alive she went looking for him. However, she found a man who had stolen her husband’s identity. Despite being angry in the beginning, the pair formed a beautiful friendship. Tragically, Anna died of cancer.
Melinda Page Hamilton (Anna Draper)
Melinda Page Hamilton has been known for playing a wide range of characters across several TV shows. Her long-standing career on TV continued after she portrayed Ann Draper on “Mad Men.” She has played recurring characters in series such as “Big Love,” “Devious Maids,” or “Rectify.” She recently played Connie Nunn in the western series “Damnation.”
Elizabeth Moss As Peggy Olson
As Peggy Olson, Elizabeth Moss played one of the most important characters on Mad Men. She was one of the few female characters that was prized for her work ability instead of just her personal decisions to sleep with (or not sleep with) male characters. She became a copywriter in short order with the company but eventually left to work elsewhere.
Elizabeth Moss Now
After Mad Men, Elizabeth Moss did The Heidi Chronicles; a successful Broadway show that she earned a Tony Award nomination for performing in. She also appeared in a number of films, though her most notable role has certainly been the lead role in The Handmaid’s Tale, for which she won several major awards.
Jon Hamm As Don Draper
Don Draper was the lead character in Mad Men and the lens through which the viewer saw many of the changes during the show’s tenure. He had unsuccessful marriages but always performed well at work. He also had a memorable plot related to his surprise identity. Eventually, he left to start his own business.
Jon Hamm Now
Jon Hamm was in demand after Mad Men concluded, and ended up playing roles in TV shows such as Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and appearing in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp. He also showed up in the films Baby Driver and Keeping Up With the Joneses, among others. He’s been rumored as a potential actor to play Batman, as well.
Jessica Pare As Megan Draper
Megan Draper was played by Jessica Pare, and the character was Don Draper’s third and final wife on the show. Surprisingly enough, it was not her looks, but her ways with Don’s kids that first got Don’s attention. He ended up quickly asking her to marry him. Her character ultimately decided to pursue acting, and their marriage didn’t work out.
Jessica Pare Now
After Mad Men, Jessica Pare has had a number of roles, appearing in the TV series SEAL Team and the films Someone Else’s Wedding and Brooklyn. She’s also been announced as the lead in the upcoming film Queen Bee. She is married to musician John Kastner, who she has a child with.
